Sustainability is related to ecological integrity, social justice and economic development concerned with the preservation of a common environment for future generations. In effect, among the critical environmental failure, other issues accompanied such degradation as climate change, poverty, hunger, peace, justice, inequalities in gender, education, opportunities…as reported by United Nations (UN). The urgent call for sustainable development is patent in the new Agenda 2030, a plan of action for people, the planet, and prosperity with 17 Sustainable Development Goals summarized by the UN regarding the three dimensions of a supportable development, namely economic, social and environmental. Climate change, overpopulation and waste management, air and ocean pollution among others are global challenges requiring urgently innovative approaches, a redesign of the existing acting plans to intensify individual and collective efforts and commitment to achieve the essential human-ecosystem balance. This change needs more sustainable design.
If the modus operandi of designers intends to contribute to the improvement of people’s life then it means that designers have to take action regarding environmental, economic, and social impacts throughout the product lifecycle. Designers must be aware that designing for sustainability is a learning process that requires awareness, reflection, and informed thinking about how products and services are made, distributed, consumed and discarded.
Facing the urgent need for performing a regenerative change, design can be a powerful driver of action using Audiovisual Media such as movies, radio, television, videos, podcast, posters, among others, as communication tools to encourage a shift to a more sustainable way of living.
This debate table aims to promote discussion around the demand for more sustainable design in collaboration with the audiovisual media to pursue ways of thinking and behaving in line with the contemporary challenges for a different lifestyle.
Some questions, among many others, to trigger the writing of papers might be:
- How can audiovisual media enhance a more sustainable design approach to engage people in a more sustainable way of life?
- What is the role of audiovisual media to encourage designers’ proactive attitude in contributing
to a more sustainable design? - How are designers using audiovisual media as a communication tool to raise awareness towards a sustainable attitude?
- Do you know case studies to discuss within this topic?
We invite researchers, designers, educators, students, activists, facilitators to contribute with a more theoretical or more practical perspective to enrich this debate.
